Just checked out a new Japanese restaurant near O’Hare Airport in Des Plaines called Oba Contemporary Japanese. Friendly staff, excellent sushi and a great time! Located in a small strip mall, Oba has a hip and intimate atmosphere with a friendly and attentive staff. The sushi was excellent–fresh and delicious–as were the cooked dishes, including Mushrooms Stuffed with Crab Meat and the Oba Signature Cooked Roll (served in a flaming dish). You’ll find Oba at 1285 Elmhurst Rd., Des Plaines, 847-228-8810, www.obasushi.net. -By Russ Hoefer, Editor

My wife and I recently dined at Oba Contemporary Japanese and we really, really liked it. The intimate space is a romantic hidden gem restaurant that has some of the best specialty maki and tasty appetizers we have ever had, and the large menu has numerous wonderful sounding dishes that will bring us back again and again with family and friends. We tried that flaming Fire roll and it was out-of-this-world delicious, perfect for sharing for 2. Highly recommend this NW suburban sushi oasis to anyone who is serious about their sushi and sashimi, and those who like to try new maki creations. It was easy to get to, on Elmhurst Road just south of Algonguin Rd. Enjoy!
